Nicolas Cage’s $10.5m Malibu home hit by massive sinkhole as 31 nearby homes evacuated

Nicolas Cage’s Malibu home has been hit by a massive sinkhole that has destroyed parts of the property and forced officials to order evacuations for 31 nearby homes.

The sinkhole, which opened in the driveway of the Oscar winner’s oceanfront residence, had grown to about 60 feet wide and 25 feet deep by the evening of September 8. Cage’s front deck and driveway completely collapsed into the ground, although most of the main residence appeared to remain intact.

The situation was serious enough for the City of Los Angeles to issue an emergency declaration, warning that the collapsed road was making it difficult for emergency crews to reach the area.

“Emergency personnel access is severely constrained and may be impassable, due to the large portion of the road that has collapsed,” the city said.

Officials also warned that the conditions could get worse because of high tides linked to Tropical Storm Marie, which had been downgraded from a hurricane on September 7.

Cage bought the Malibu property in 2024 for $10.5 million. The 4,000-square-foot home has an ocean-facing backyard, a secluded beach, a roof deck, four levels and floor-to-ceiling glass walls.

The actor, known for National Treasure, has three children. He shares four-year-old August with his wife Riko Shibata, and has sons Weston, 35, and Kal-El, 20, from previous relationships.

Cage’s representatives had not responded to requests for comment on the damage.

The incident comes just over a year after several of Cage’s Hollywood colleagues lost or suffered major damage to their homes during the Southern California wildfires in January 2025.

Kate Hudson, Leighton Meester, Adam Brody and Paris Hilton were among those affected by the fires.

Hudson spoke about the experience a month later, saying, “I think that it’s something that you would never imagine you’d ever see in your lifetime, or experience.”
