NASCAR legend Gary Myers has died at the age of 76, with his sons Burt and Jason Myers confirming his death in separate Facebook posts on September 11.

Gary died on September 10 after being part of a four-generation racing family that included his father, Billy Myers, uncle Bobby Myers, sons Burt and Jason, and grandson Slate Myers.

Burt, 50, described his father as his “hero” while announcing the death.

“Last night I lost my hero,” Burt wrote. “He fought so hard but was so tired. My daddy is in Heaven and can finally do the things he wanted to do the last several years.”

Burt said Gary taught him everything he knows and admitted that he wished his father was still around.

“Selfishly, I want him here, but I know he is much better off now. I miss him so much. I love you Daddy,” he wrote.

Jason also paid tribute to his father, calling him the family’s “patriarch” and describing Gary as his best friend.

“Last night we lost our patriarch,” Jason wrote. He said Gary taught both him and Burt everything they know and touched many people along the way.

“To know him, was to love him. Rest easy, legend. You will be with us always,” he added.

Gary continued a family racing tradition that began with his father Billy and uncle Bobby.

His sons Burt and Jason later followed him into racing, while his grandson Slate has also started a racing career, extending the family’s involvement in the sport across four generations.
